The village

Apricale

Welcome to Apricale, a sun-drenched medieval village nestled in the Ligurian hills just a short drive from the Riviera. Perched on a dramatic ridge overlooking the Nervia Valley, the town gets its name from the Latin apricus—meaning “exposed to the sun.”

Formally established in the 10th century around the Castello della Lucertola (Castle of the Lizard) by the Counts of Ventimiglia, Apricale was later ruled by the Doria family and frequently found itself caught in feudal rivalries with the Grimaldis of Monaco. Despite these conflicts, the village established its own written laws as early as 1267 (the Statuti Apricalesi), making it one of the earliest self-governing communes in Liguria. Cascading down the hillside in stone arches, winding alleyways, and hidden plazas, Apricale is officially recognized as one of I Borghi più belli d'Italia (The Most Beautiful Villages in Italy).
